Tragedy struck South Africa’s Gondwana Game Reserve when FC Conradie, the 39-year-old CEO and co-owner, was fatally trampled by an elephant on Tuesday morning, July 22.
Emergency responders arrived around 8 a.m. but found Conradie already dead from severe injuries. The elephant had been moved away by the time help arrived.
Conradie is survived by his wife and three young children. Described by loved ones as a visionary, mentor, and passionate conservationist, his death has left the community in deep mourning.
“He was more than a leader—he was a truly remarkable human being,” a family spokesperson said. “His dedication to conservation and sustainable tourism touched countless lives.”
The incident comes just a year after another staff member, guide David Kandela, was also killed by an elephant at the same reserve, amid wider reports of elephants breaking into nearby camps.
As the conservation world reflects on this painful loss, the family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.
