Beloved Texas Camp Owner Dies Saving Children in Deadly Flood

Texas has declared a state of disaster after devastating floods swept through 15 counties, killing at least 82 people — including 28 children.

One of the victims was 74-year-old Richard “Dick” Eastland, co-owner of Camp Mystic in Kerr County. On July 4, floodwaters tore through the historic Christian girls’ camp along the Guadalupe River, where over 700 children were staying. Eastland died while trying to rescue campers. He was found in an SUV with three girls he had tried to evacuate and later died on the way to the hospital.

His heroic actions and decades of service have left a lasting mark on the community.
