Pharr brothers accused of killing stepdad back in court

Christian and Alejandro Treviño, the brothers accused of killing their stepfather, were back in court Monday as their legal case continues. The two have been in custody since January 2022, when police discovered the body of 42-year-old Gabriel Quintanilla in McAllen, Texas.

According to Pharr Police, the brothers attacked Quintanilla after a younger relative accused him of inappropriate touching. At the time of the incident, Christian was 17 and Alejandro was 18.

During Monday’s hearing, their defense attorney requested more time while they await DNA results from a GMC truck connected to the case. Investigators say brass knuckles, allegedly used in the beating, were also found in the vehicle.

Juan Melendez, a third person charged in the case, also appeared in court. He was previously released on bond in August 2022.

Christian is facing a charge of capital murder by terroristic threat and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Alejandro and Melendez face one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The trial, originally set for December 2024, has been postponed. A new trial date is still pending. All three men are due back in court on April 7.
